<image:title>BLOG - Review: Loving the Little Years, By: Rachel Jankovic - THREE QUOTES: “Suddenly they understood. In the context of the story, they could hear the missed note at the end. Setting behaviours into stories is a great way to communicate with your little people. Got a boy hitting a sister? Tell him about a brave knight who went out to fight the dragon but started hitting the princess instead. Give the children a chance to get outside themselves and see their behaviour as it plays out in a story. It often turns out that they know exactly the right thing to do.” “We tell our girls that their feelings are like horses — beautiful, spirited horses. But they are the riders. We tell them that God gave them this horse when they were born, and they will ride it their whole life. God also set us on a path on the top of a mountain together and told us to follow it. We can see for a long way — there are beautiful flowers, lakes, trees, and rainbows. (We are little girls after all!)…The goal is not to cripple the horse, but equip the rider. A well-controlled passionate personality is a powerful thing. That is what dangerous women are made of.”</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Review: The New Trail of Tears: How Washington is Destroying American Indians, By: Naomi Schaefer Riley - THREE QUOTES: “In the past two years, I’ve travelled to Indian communities around the United States and Canada. I’ve interviewed tribal leaders, economists, educators, business people, and government officials, all in an effort to understand what ails American Indians, particularly those on reservations. The results are by no means a comprehensive history of American Indians or even a complete picture of American Indians today. There are 562 federally recognized Indian nations in the United States - about half of which are in Alaska - and 310 reservations. Any book about American Indians will have to make some generalizations. And for that I apologize in advance. But the fact that these groups have different cultural traditions, different treaties, and different economic, political, and social situations doesn’t mean they have nothing in common.” “As you’ll see in this book, the problems American Indians face today — lack of economic opportunity, lack of education, and lack of equal protection under the law — and the solutions to these problems require a different approach from the misguided paternalism of the past 150 years. <image:title>BLOG - Review: Raising Worry-Free Girls, By: Sissy Goff - THREE QUOTATIONS: “When your daughter has a little help, a lot of empowerment, and a foundational faith, worries don’t have to carry the same power in her life. With God’s help, I really believe you can raise a worry-free girl.” “Girls with anxiety overestimate the threat and underestimate themselves and their ability to cope.” “Anxiety can be sneaky and show up in ways we don’t recognize. Yesterday at a conference I spoke with a woman who told me she had just learned her lifelong stomachaches weren’t a medical problem but caused instead by anxiety. She is in her forties, is a mother of five, has written ten books, and she’s just learning to recognize the Worry Monster for who he is — conniving and relentless. He’s relentless until your daughter learns to face him with the strength and truth of who God made her to be. That’s where we’re going in this chapter. But first, I’m wondering if you’re a little like me, and the Worry Monster is starting to sound like another adversary we all know too well… 1 Peter 5:8-11 — Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Review: The Gospel Comes with a House Key, By: Rosaria Butterfield - Three Quotes: “ But how do we as Christians live in contagious grace? To see that in action, let’s move to the Gospel of John…the key to contagious grace—the grace that allows the margins to move to the centre, the grace that commands you to never fear the future, the grace that reveals that what humbles you cannot hurt you if Jesus is your Lord — that grace is ours when we do what Mary says to do on this scene. She says to us (and the Holy Spirit says to us): “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Simple right? No. We cannot will ourselves into the deep obedience that God requires…We can’t obey until we face the facts: the gospel comes in exchange for the life we once loved.” “May my words give grace to those who hear. My words are not pep talks. I hope, indeed, that my words are not even my own but Christ’s working through me. Invest in your neighbours for the long haul, the hundreds of conversations that make up a neighbourhood, and stop thinking of conversations with neighbours as sneaky evangelistic raids in their sinful lives. Maybe our own lives are actually more sinful.” “… hospitality gives no cheap love, the kind that says your idols are welcome here, the kind that buys counterfeit categories of what it means to be human. Idolatry is dangerous — as well as delusional. It miscues our worship, affections, identity, and community. And it is easy — cheap and easy…That is why the sharp edges of hospitality ought to never be overlooked: God does not love us just the way we are. God’s love is costly, bloody, and powerful…This is authentic Christianity, and its steep costs and high yield can be withstood only when the strength of our words matches the strength of our relationships. These far-reaching things go well with trust and lentil soup, with hot apple cider and fresh bread, with dog walking, child loving, and erranding, with the asking of forgiveness and the seeking of a second chance.”</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Review: The Quest for Cosmic Justice, By: Thomas Sowell - THREE QUOTES: “Nobody should be happy with cosmic injustices. The real questions are: 1 ) What can we do about them — and at what cost? 2) What should we do collectively about them — and how much should we leave up to the individuals themselves? (Pg. 43) “What is crucial here is not simply that the apostles of politically imposed equality wish to see a certain kind of world, but that they are heedless of what their efforts are doing to the real world around them.” (Pg 95) “In summary, cosmic justice attempts to create equal results or equal prospects, with little or no regard for whether the individuals or groups involved are in equal circumstances or have equal capabilities or equal personal drives. To do this, it cannot operate under general rules, the essence of law, but must create categories of people entitled to various outcomes, regardless of their own inputs.” (Pg. 160) TWO TAKEAWAYS: How we understand our identity greatly impacts how we understand our personal responsibility and our ‘rights to equality’. Is our identity rooted in our creator? Our social group? Our primary role/responsibility (ie. mother, banker, teacher)? Our worldly view of justice does not align with God’s just and righteous character. ONE NEXT STEP: Use my study Bible to research Biblical justice and gain a better understanding of God’s just character.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Review: Sold A Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong - THREE POINTS: I am a trained educator with 9 years of experience. I have used the program discussed in the podcast (Fountas and Pinnell) with many students of varying abilities and strengths. I have experienced first hand how this reading program is a disservice to children. In some cases it harms their ability to learn to read, thus greatly impacting their ability to learn. As a parent and an educator, I urge parents to not blindly trust the education board to know what’s best for your child’s education. You can read your province/territory’s curriculum online, ask your school board what teaching programs they mandate, and ask the principal and/or resource teacher which supplementary programs they use.</image:title>
<image:caption>TWO TAKEAWAYS: It is as bad as we thought. In the podcast, Emily Hanford, interviews educator’s who felt trapped in the vortex of a reading instruction program (Fountas and Pinnell) that was not working for their students. The program was mandated by the board, and there was no escaping it or even raising concerns about it, if you wanted to keep your job. But the program does not teach all children well. It is over prescribed and the data is not being rightfully evaluated by stakeholders in education. When I was working in the school I knew this reading program was not working. I also felt trapped in the vortex of its popularity and didn’t realize how wide spread across America this frustration was felt. The tide is turning. Like many educational policies, the pendulum swings back and forth as new programs and methods exit or enter the ‘playing field’. Hanford’s research indicates that reading instruction in America is improving and people are listening to the data and make necessary adjustments. ONE NEXT STEP: Spread the word about this podcast and Emily Hanford’s research.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Book Review: Made For People, By: Justin Whitmel Earley - THREE QUOTES “With rebuke, on the other hand, we are often afraid of being judgmental. Our cultural moment thinks of friends as the people who are nonjudgmental when it comes to our flaws. We like to keep them around because they ‘accept us as we are.’ But that assumes that ‘who we are’ is ‘who we should be'. It assumes that following our hearts will lead us to good places. The only problem is that those are wildly dangerous assumptions. When the honesty we need is seen as judgment we should avoid, we are in a really bad spot.” - Justin Whitmel Earley “We were made for people, and when we live close to them, we flourish. When we let ourselves drift along the invisible current into loneliness, a real part of us beings to wither, and eventually, it dies. The enemy knows this. Which is why loneliness is not just dangerous, it is evil.” - Justin Whitmel Earley “We need one another in the fight against evil - that much is certain. But we can’t save one another. Not in the end. But there is a Friend we can save us.” - Justin Whitmel Earley</image:title>
<image:caption>TWO TAKEAWAYS Though God is sufficient, and in the end only Jesus can save us - we were made by our creator for friendship and relationship with others. It is easy to think friends come and go with seasons (and some do), but maybe we let them go to easily. True - fully known- friendship requires vulnerability, honesty, covenant, forgiveness, invitation, geography, time, communication, memory, and worship. ONE NEXT STEP Take the first step, be awkward, and ask a friend if they want to commit to a 'covenant friendship.’ Rebecca</image:caption>

<image:caption>Priscilla, Where Are You? A Call to Joyful Theology, Natalie Brand. THREE QUOTATIONS “Still, it was her simple commitment to the gospel truth that proved her to be indispensable to the church.” “Her face is displaying a stomach-stirring desire to speak out the gospel…I know what that looks like. I have seen it on the faces of many dear sisters in Christ: a holy restlessness to declare aloud the goodness and wonders of God.” “‘I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (2 Tim 1:5). If Lois and Eunice had had weak theology, it wouldn’t have done Timothy much good. John Piper once said, “Wimpy theology makes wimpy women.”” TWO TAKEAWAYS Dive into studying theology and take it one step at a time - no need to be overwhelmed. Studying the Word and studying theology will cause my love and wonder for God to spill out for others. ONE NEXT STEP Find a biblical theology podcast to listen to while I cook dinner.</image:caption>
